Hosting a BuffaLoRa Node on Your Property

Thank you for considering to host a BuffaLoRa node! We understand that allowing equipment on your property raises important questions. Below is what you can expect and how it benefits both you and the community.

What is BuffaLoRa?

BuffaLoRa is a community-run communication network started in Snyder, NY as SnyderMesh but has been expanding region wide. It is powered by small, low-energy radio devices called nodes. These devices connect with one another to create a “mesh” network that works without cell towers, Wi-Fi, or internet. It’s free to use, reliable during power or internet outages, and strengthens local connections here in Western NY.

Why place a node on my property?

By hosting a node, you:

  • Boost Community Coverage – Your property helps extend reliable communication across our region.
  • Support Public Safety & Resilience – Mesh networks are especially valuable during weather events, power failures, or emergencies.
  • Enable Neighbors & Explorers – Hikers, cyclists, and families all benefit from improved coverage.

What does hosting involve?

  • Small Equipment – Typically a device about the size of a Wi-Fi router, with a small antenna.
  • Minimal Power Use – Each node consumes about the same electricity as charging a phone and can be fully solar powered if placed outside.
  • Discreet Installation – Nodes are usually mounted outdoors (on a roof, balcony, or pole) for the best range. We work with you to place it where it’s unobtrusive.
  • Hands-Off Maintenance – Once set up, nodes run quietly in the background. BuffaLoRa volunteers handle configuration and upkeep.

What about privacy and safety?

  • No Internet Access Required – The node only relays short radio messages between devices.
  • No Personal Data – Nodes do not track or share your internet, Wi-Fi, or home network.
  • Safe & Legal – Devices operate at low radio power under FCC rules, similar to walkie-talkies.
  • Transparent – You can see what the device does and even monitor its activity if you wish.

Who is responsible for the equipment?

BuffaLoRa provides, installs, and maintains the hardware. If anything ever needs repair, we’ll take care of it promptly. If you ever decide you no longer wish to host, we’ll remove the node with no hassle.
